Taste it, is it sweet enough? Add some sugar or honey to it after you warm it up. I’d use sugar.

Hoisin sauce is much sweeter than black bean. Black bean is fermented beans and heavy on the garlic. So maybe add some extra soy sauce thickened with cornstarch, and some pressed or grated garlic? Good luck, I know how frustrating it is to run out in the middle of cooking!

Here’s my recipe: Combine 3T water, 1 T dry sherry, 1T lite soy sauce and 2 tsp cornstarch in a small bowl, set aside.
Combine 1 T cornstarch, and 1/2 t salt in a bowl. Toss with beef, set aside.
In large skillet, heat 2T oil over high heat, add 3 dried red chilies, seeds removed, and stir-fry until they begin to darken. Add 4 green onions, diagonally sliced, 1T minced garlic and 1-1/2tsp minced ginger root, continue stirring 2 minutes. Add beef mixture, stir until beef is cooked. Add sherry mixture, stir until sauce thinkens. Add 1/2 cup peanuts and stir. Serve with prepared rice, if desired.
I also use this with shrimp and chicken.
There is also a great recipe on recipezaar.com for Kung Pao. Have fun and happy eating. .
