Hoisin's flavor and texture come from fermented soybean paste, sugar, garlic, chili and Chinese five-spice or star anise. Its reddish brown color comes from red rice colored with annatto seed. Used as a condiment for roast pork and poultry and to make a glaze for grilled meats for a sweet and salty balance.
